How exactly does one use his thumb to guide line onto the spool casting with a saltwater reel w/o levelwind?
I just took a Saltist Daiwa I'll be casting Muskies with. I've never thrown a real w / oa levelwind and I read your guide on the spool with your thumb. Do you use the side of your thumb and guide the envelope before it actually on the reel or you can press it back down with your thumb as he began to ask about the coil?

grip cane in his left hand as you reel with your right hand use your left thumb to push the line back and forth as you reel, practice makes perfect, and you DO want to practice before you connect, because that in the excitement of the hook until you want it to be automatic, otherwise you might end up with the line winding in one place and rubbing against the bar and not be able to reel in more online and that sucks. . . . . .

With a reel saltwater you hold the rod above the reel with your left hand (unlike a Baitcast where you took it below the coil). Your thumb is at least 5-6 inches above the reel and line guides you with the underside of the end of pouce.Voici a link to a picture that shows: http://www. robertcurtis. com/fish/bent_rod2. jpgComme the other poster said, it takes a little practice to get used to doing, but after a bit it is second nature. If you do not, the line is stacked, which makes the tensions on subsequent casts more likely. If it gets really crowded, it will bind against the rails of the coil and prevent you from winding all in. plusEDIT: By “above” the coil I meant closer to the end of the rod coil. With baitcasters (and pistol grip) you hold the rod with your left hand “below” the coil, as closer to the butt of the rod. Sorry if it was not clear. (Yes, I have not looked at the table, and it took some googling to find one that has clearly shown that the thumb.)
